As AI systems become more powerful, they also become more energy-intensive. Training large models now consumes as much electricity as some small nations. At the same time, AI presents significant opportunities for helping address some our climate’s biggest challenges, through playing key roles in optimising renewable energy, monitoring biodiversity, and informing ecological decision-making.

Join us on Friday 30th May from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at Seed130, where our expert panel will explore both the promise and the peril of AI's environmental footprint.

Our speakers include:

Mat Collishaw is a leading figure of the Young British Artists movement, known for his immersive works probing the subconscious, technology, and collective memory.

Dr Gabrielle Samuel has a background in genetics, sociology, and bioethics and is a Lecturer and co-Director of SHADE, focusing on the ethical and social aspects of digital health, AI, and big data.

Professor Jacqueline McGlade is an environmental scientist and lecturer at Strathmore University and UCL. Former UN Chief Scientist and European Environment Agency Director, she researches the circular bioeconomy, pollution, and ecosystem modelling.

Mark Davy (chair) is the Founder of Futurecity, a global placemaking agency established in 2007 to promote culture-driven development. As a former artist, Davy champions culture as the guiding force behind the regeneration and development of towns, cities, and regions.

From the carbon cost of massive computing infrastructure to the hidden impact of rare earth extraction, we’ll examine whether “green AI” is a genuine shift or just another layer of branding.

We’ll ask whether AI can truly accelerate the transition to renewable energy, or if it is simply shifting the burden elsewhere? - and we’ll address how these technologies intersect with issues of justice, power, and planetary stewardship.
